The Toyota bZ4X was introduced back in 2023 and although it's been a big hit in Europe, the market in the US has been less enthusiastic. Its Subaru twin, the Solterra, has had much better luck. To counter this lack of enthusiasm for the bZ4X, Toyota added new features for the 2024 model year and rolled out a big price cut for 2025 to entice American buyers. Now, big changes for this EV are on the way for Europe.
The biggest news is a new dual-battery option with a choice of either a 57.7 kWh or 73.1 kWh battery pack. The smaller pack will be available only with front-wheel drive, while the larger pack will have the option for all-wheel drive. This will give it a max range of 573 km on the WLTP cycle used in Europe, which is roughly 356 miles.
Along with the choice of two batteries, the bZ4X gets more power. It added more energy-efficient eAxles that use silicon carbide semiconductors. This makes it one of the most powerful Toyota models in Europe, except for the performance GR vehicles. Towing capacity is also increased for all-wheel drive models with a rating of 1,500 kg, or roughly 3,307 pounds, which is double the previous figure.
A styling update was also in order for the bZ4X, both inside and out. It has a sleeker, more refined look up front, which not only looks better, but helps improve the vehicle's aerodynamics. Bigger changes happen inside with a new center console and a new instrument panel design. A standard 14-inch infotainment touchscreen replaces the old 12.3-inch screen and there are now dual wireless charging pads. The ride is improved as well with a new suspension setting and bodywork that will help reduce noise and vibration.
Software changes include new battery pre-conditioning as a standard feature. This will help ensure the bZ4X is at the optimum temperature before charging so it can charge at a higher power. This feature can be activated either manually or automatically simply by navigating to a fast-charging station.
The navigation function in the bZ4X will select a recommended route that includes charging stations along the way, all depending on the vehicle's current state of charge and its current remaining range. Those who already own a bZ4X will find this feature newly available through an over-the-air update. Charging is also made easier and quicker thanks to a new 11-kW onboard charger or the optional 22-kW charger. These replace the current 6.6 kW unit. What doesn't change is the maximum DC charging power of 150 kW.
The new bZ4X is due to arrive in Europe this fall. No word yet on when or if the same changes will be making their way to the US market.
