We're sad to say that some of our favorite cars will be discontinued after this year. These models are getting the ax for various reasons. Some of them are bowing out due to poor sales, some due to fuel and emissions targets, and some simply due to the automakers shifting their design focus for the future. Some of these models are slated to return in different forms in the future, while others are being replaced by completely new models.
Regular commuter cars like the Subaru Legacy to venerable supercars like the Nissan GT-R will no longer be coming off the production lines, leaving regular drivers and enthusiasts alike saddened. Here is a list of 10 cars that have been or will be discontinued soon. In either case, we'll miss them dearly.
Looking for a sports car that's understated but still delivers on thrills? Here's a list of unassuming models to consider.
In order to give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from various manufacturers and other authoritative sources, including Autoblog. The following entries will be discontinued soon or already have been. They are ordered from the least expensive to the most.
Starting off this list is the respectable and capable Subaru Legacy. The Legacy is a family sedan that first appeared in 1989 and was only meant for the U.S. market. Back then, it was available in both sedan and wagon form, and Subaru continued to build it in both body styles until 2010.
Engine | 2.5-liter flat-four |
Transmission | CVT |
Horsepower | 182 hp |
Torque | 176 lb-ft |
Driveline | AWD |
0-60 MPH | 8.0 seconds |
Top Speed | 130 mph |
Subaru says that over 1.3 million Legacys have been sold since its inception and that its departure “reflects market shifts from passenger cars to SUVs and crossovers and Subaru's transition to electrified and fully electric vehicles.” The current Legacy is the seventh generation of the moniker and will be discontinued after the 2025 model year.
Chevrolet is another automaker that is planning to shift its focus onto an electrified future with its models, so it is discontinuing the Malibu. This discontinuation marks the end of a 27-year run for the Malibu since its resurrection onto the market in 1997.
Engine | Turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-four |
Transmission | CVT |
Horsepower | 160 hp |
Torque | 184 lb-ft |
Driveline | FWD |
0-60 MPH | 7.8 seconds |
Top Speed | 130 mph |
The Malibu has held strong in recent years, but sales have dwindled lately, especially with Americans' love for SUVs and trucks. It's a shame, considering the Malibu seemed to represent the all-American family sedan for years, but now, it will no longer see its way into the garages or driveways across the nation after this year.
The time has come, and an American muscle car icon is finally taking its last bow. After a storied run that has technically lasted for decades, Chevrolet is finally killing off the Camaro.
Engine | 6.2-liter V8 |
Transmission | 10-speed automatic or 6-speed manual |
Horsepower | 455 hp |
Torque | 455 lb-ft |
Driveline | RWD |
0-60 MPH | 3.9 seconds |
Top Speed | 155 mph |
The Panther edition is the Camaro's swan song, and we're sure its absence will leave a large hole in the sports car category. Chevy has yet to say what may come of the Camaro's future, but it could be EV-related.
We already know hybrid cars don’t have to be boring, but the Prelude might take that to the next level
No, the Toyota GR Supra is not going away, but its entry-level 2.0 trim level is. The base version of the GR Supra was meant to be an affordable gateway into the car, despite it having far fewer horsepower than its 3.0-liter counterpart.
Engine | Turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four |
Transmission | 8-speed automatic |
Horsepower | 255 hp |
Torque | 295 lb-ft |
Driveline | RWD |
0-60 MPH | 5.0 seconds |
Top Speed | 155 mph |
The GR Supra 2.0 was still pretty quick for a large sports car with a four-cylinder engine, but apparently, it wasn't a hit with the public. Sadly, it may not be missed much, but the good news is that these four-cylinder Supras could show up for a good price on the used market in the near future.
The Volvo S60 is making an exit at the end of this model year as well. The S60 was once known for its elegant Scandinavian styling, upscale interior, and cutting-edge safety features.
Engine | Turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four |
Transmission | 8-speed automatic |
Horsepower | 250 hp |
Torque | 258 lb-ft |
Driveline | FWD |
0-60 MPH | 6.1 seconds |
Top Speed | 131 mph |
Unfortunately, the rise in popularity of SUVs and crossovers has made it take a backseat to its larger stablemates. The Volvo S60 will be gone, but it won't be forgotten.
The Infiniti Q50 was a popular sedan that went up against more extravagant, and more expensive, German rivals from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. But now, with the increasing interest in SUVs, Infiniti is discontinuing the Q50.
Engine | Twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 |
Transmission | 7-speed automatic |
Horsepower | 300 hp |
Torque | 295 lb-ft |
Driveline | AWD |
0-60 MPH | 5.0 seconds |
Top Speed | 150 mph |
This discontinuation could also mark the shift that Infiniti is making toward only offering SUVs and crossovers, which leaves fewer luxury sedan choices in the market for buyers.
Though a used model, this sedan refuses to be out-muscled by any model hovering the $40K and under market.
The Jaguar F-Type's sleek silhouette made it a fixture for car enthusiasts from the moment it debuted. Its low-slung stature and choice of powerful engines made the F-Type one of the most desirable sports car picks in the market.
Engine | Supercharged 5.0-liter V8 |
Transmission | 8-speed automatic |
Horsepower | 444 hp |
Torque | 428 lb-ft |
Driveline | RWD |
0-60 MPH | 4.0 seconds |
Top Speed | 177 mph |
However, it's time for it to go, and we're sure car enthusiasts will miss its sonorous exhaust sound and gorgeous aesthetics.
The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio was the up-level trim to go for if you wanted the most power from the unique-looking sedan. After all, it's hard to argue with the tried-and-true formula of a Ferrari-derived twin-turbocharged engine, four doors, and super-sharp handling.
Engine | Twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 |
Transmission | 8-speed automatic |
Horsepower | 505 hp |
Torque | 443 lb-ft |
Driveline | RWD |
0-60 MPH | 3.6 seconds |
Top Speed | 191 mph |
However, it's time for it and its Stelvio Quadrifoglio stablemate to go, and they will surely be missed.
Known by enthusiasts as “Godzilla,” the Nissan GT-R has been an icon in the supercar crowd for decades. Well, at least the moniker has. The R35 GT-R that we have come to know and love has been on the market since 2009, and it will soon be discontinued.
Engine | Twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 |
Transmission | 6-speed dual-clutch automatic |
Horsepower | 600 hp |
Torque | 481 lb-ft |
Driveline | AWD |
0-60 MPH | 3.0 seconds |
Top Speed | 198 mph |
Interestingly, critics and enthusiasts may have wondered why Nissan never updated the R35 GT-R during its 15-year run, but we guess it doesn't matter now. For now, we can only hope there is an R36 model on the horizon.
The two models drive off into the sunset as their production lifecycle comes to an end, the Roma and 812 Competizione will soon follow.
Unlike most of the other cars on this list, the Audi R8 has been discontinued for over a year, but we still mourn its loss. The Audi R8 arrived in 2008 and was the brand's flagship supercar. The first generation of the model came equipped with either a V8 or V10 engine.
Engine | 5.2-liter V10 |
Transmission | 7-speed dual-clutch automatic |
Horsepower | 602 hp |
Torque | 413 lb-ft |
Driveline | RWD |
0-60 MPH | 3.1 seconds |
Top Speed | 199 mph |
But its second generation was only offered with the V10, making it a more affordable substitute for its Lamborghini corporate cousin. We can only hope that Audi builds another halo car like the R8 in the future, but for now, earlier versions of the supercar can be found on the used market for far less than $100,000, which has perused the classifieds and saved up our pennies.
