RARE CARS FOR SALE ON HEMMINGS MARKETPLACE YOU MAY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF

From limited production runs to unique designs, rare cars have a special allure that attracts collectors and enthusiasts alike, especially when it comes to rare cars with a history. Here are six examples that are currently listed for sale on Hemmings Marketplace.

1968 Lamborghini Islero Coupe

This 1968 Lamborghini Islero Coupe, a rare evolution of Lamborghini’s classic 1960s Grand Tourer, is the fifth example of only 125 Isleros built, and it sports some unique characteristics which were present on only the earliest examples. It is believed that Ferruccio Lamborghini himself greatly influenced the car’s styling, and it was generally considered one of his favorite creations. Since Lamborghini’s go-to coachbuilder, Carrozzeria Touring, was no longer in business, Lamborghini commissioned ex-Touring personnel led by Mario Marazzi to design and build the elegantly understated coachwork which was new for the model.

According to the Hemmings Marketplace listing, “This outstanding example is one of the finest Isleros that has been brought to market in recent years.” Since this example was an early production run, it wears the rare Borrani wire wheels, matching the Islero that appeared at the Geneva Salon and in the company’s brochure. This car also features unique side vents in the front fenders.  Learn more here.

1949 Buick Roadmaster Wagon

You’re looking at a fully restored Buick Roadmaster woody wagon, the finest, most luxurious wagon built in America during its time. Only 653 were built in 1949. Today, fewer than 20 are known to exist, and one of them is right here on Hemmings Marketplace.

For fans of genuine wood-bodied wagons, the 1949 Buick Roadmaster is the absolute pinnacle of desirability. One-year-only styling is arguably the most successful blend of the dramatic sweep-spear fender lines introduced in 1942. Its modern features carried Buick into the 1950s.

The listing for this example states that the woodwork is mostly original, the doors fit well, and there are only a few minor signs of use; “For many wagon enthusiasts, the 1949 Buick Roadmaster is the Holy Grail, a rare find that embodies all that we love about these land yachts.”

1954 Humber Super Snipe

Out of all the classic cars on this list, this 1954 Humber Super Snipe is likely the least known about model. Offered for sale by the Larz Anderson Auto Museum, this 1954 Humber Super Snipe was specifically designed for the 1953-1954 Commonwealth Royal Tour to chauffeur the late Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh (Prince Philip). This specific Humber Super Snipe was used in Sri Lanka during the Queens Commonwealth tour. After the Commonwealth tour, the British government chose to sell the cars locally instead of shipping them back to England.

In 2021, the Humber was acquired by the Larz Anderson Auto Museum and was used in various museum exhibits over the three-year ownership period. Its provenance was proven by Post Vintage Humber Car Club Historian, Steve Lewis, who confirmed that the VIN and configuration of this Super Snipe identified it as one of six convertibles used by Queen Elizabeth. Now this piece of royal history is offered for sale on Hemmings Marketplace.

1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429

Made by modifying existing 428 Cobra Jet and Super Cobra Jet Mach 1 Mustangs, the origin of the Boss 429 was a result of Ford’s desire to compete in NASCAR. Modifications included widening the shock towers and extending out the inner fenders to fit the massive 429 engine. The mounts for the front suspension were chopped and displaced to create room for the block and exhaust manifolds, and the battery was moved to the trunk. A stiff .75-inch sway bar was added to the rear end to improve handling, and it was also equipped with a 3.91-ratio rear axle with a Traction-Lok limited-slip differential. In addition, a hole was cut in the hood, and a manually controlled hood scoop was added. Other features included a front spoiler and color-keyed dual racing mirrors, the Hurst competition shifter and a four-speed manual transmission. The Boss was rated conservatively at 375 horsepower, while actual output was believed to be well over 500 horses.

NASCAR required that at least 500 cars be fitted with the competition motor and sold to the general public for homologation purposes. In total, there were 859 original ’69 Boss 429s and only 499 for the 1970 model year, making the Boss 429 is arguably one of the rarest and most valued muscle cars from the era. This example is known as “Orange Blossom III” and is one of only two Boss 429s known to have been raced in the IMSA Camel GT series. Learn more about its history on Hemmings Marketplace.

1958 AC Aceca

The AC Aceca, inspired by the Ferrari 166, was revealed in late-1954 at the Earls Court Motor Show in London and was acclaimed the Car of the Year. Based on the open two-seat AC Ace, the Aceca was a hand-built grand tourer in the British tradition, with ash wood and steel tubing used in their construction. The car was very light due to its tubular frame, aluminum engine block, and aluminum body panels. According to the Hemmings Marketplace listing, it was the second car after the 1953 Aston Martin DB2/4 to incorporate a rear hatchback. Only 151 units of AC Aceca models, 169 Aceca Bristols, and eight Ford engined cars were built between 1954 and 1963. This is one of the 151.

1974 Pontiac Trans Am 455 Super Duty

This highly optioned 1974 Pontiac Trans Am 455 Super Duty is one of approximately 750 built in 1974. According to the Hemmings Marketplace listing, it is a very special car with documented ownership and mileage history. This is one of the last big-block high-performance muscle cars ever produced with the Shaker hood.

The unrestored original car is reportedly in ‘As new’ condition with one owner of 30 years. It comes with the factory eight track audio system, all the original handbooks, and the delivery docket and invoice from dealer. It’s arguably one of the best examples in the world, and its right here on Hemmings Marketplace.
